Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen’s Classic Love Story.
An original play, based on the novel by Jane Austen. By Erin Woods.
8 women, 5 men
MRS. BENNET
Lizzie! I see you taking time away from Collins to dance with none other than Mr. Darcy! Insufferable man, I do not know how you could stand up with him, Lizzie!
ELIZABETH
Mama, I pray you, speak lower-
MRS. BENNET
Oh no one cares for him! I am sure we owe Mr. Darcy no civility as to be obliged to say nothing he, or anyone, may not hear.
ELIZABETH
Perhaps you would like to go in now and take your seat for dinner-
MRS. BENNET
Heavens no, girl! The dancing is sure to start up again and I want to make quite sure Lady Lucas has view of Bingley’s attentions to my Jane! What a fortunate marriage that will be!-
ELIZABETH
Please, Mama—
MRS. BENNET
--His sister is so fond of her already! What a comfort it will be to see her so advantageously married! You sisters too will benefit, as they will then be thrown into the path of other rich men--!
LYDIA and KITTY turns heads through a loud bit of laughter on the other end of the room.
ELIZABETH
Certainly, you or my father will check Kitty and Lydia’s unguarded behavior; they seem determined to expose themselves as much as possible during the evening!
MRS BENNET
Oh, nonsense, Lizzie! They are spirited young girls enjoying themselves; that is all! Always trying to quiet everyone; it is insufferable! (Everyone turns to hear MRS. BENNET’S loud voice.) I beg you to go find Mr. Collins, for though you are undeserving, he seems to like you very much. And he has expressed a desire to be close to you throughout the whole of the evening. There is a match surely good enough for you!
